As a student of design I am a consumer of knowledge and a lifelong learner, and I relish the opportunity both written and visual communications present us in the conveyance of our ideas to others.
My interests include philosophy, history, Japanese culture and its influences on Western design (Art Nouveau, Japonisme), as well as humanism. As a humanist I believe that we possess an inherit ability to do good for the world, no matter who we are, and I believe in living life to the fullest in pursuit of that ideal.
Through my interest in Japanese culture, I am also much in love with design philosophies and styles such as minimalism and wabi-sabi (Japanese aesthetic). I enjoy wabi-sabi designs, as they reflect the natural and imperfect beauty of our world that I believe is vital for us to retain as we move into an increasingly artificial and urban-centric environment.
I am also deeply interested in the politics of our nation and our world, keeping up-to-date as best I can, while also trying to stay above the partisan rhetoric that too often muddies the waters of our democracy.
In my spare time I watch TED Talks, read, listen to music, learn Japanese, web design, and write. When I complete my undergraduate studies I hope to either pursue my masters in Japan, work there for a few years. I also hope to one day pursue my writing interests and see my novel ideas published.
